Those who have come before us, who have underwent and overcome the obstacles we too face, are incredible allies of support and affirmation. Our youth especially are in need of these positive role models. TOF is proud to have incredible youth mentors: University/College students and young professionals, eager to mentor the world-shapers (aged 12-18 years old) of the future. The evidence is clear that youth mentorship reduces substance use, criminal rates, and other destructive activities. Furthermore, it increases academic performance, post-secondary enrollment and success, and healthy relationships. To uplift our communities here, we run a six month longitudinal youth mentorship program called Youth Mentoring Youth. Through the generosity and funding of the Edmonton Community Fund, we just finished our second cycle on Feb/20! support for junior high and high school by older youth with similar interests Details Mentors and mentees will be paired based upon mutual interest. This is determined by filling out the mandatory questionairres (attached on the website) Mentors and mentees will meet up every 1-2 weeks either in individual pairs or in larger groups. Details: 5 minute talks from post-secondary students or young professionals in various fields: engineering, nursing, medicine, accounting, pastoring, social work etc. Each speaker will explore their unique professional journey: how they got into it, why they do it, what they actually do in their work/studies. Participants will write a short online questionairre answering your interests and dislikes and educational goals. At the end, the questionairre will list ten possible careers/fields that the participant is well suited for. Afterwards, we'll have thought-provoking discussion on what to do with this information. Impressed by their dedication, we asked "What is the impact you want to have on your community?" - Marii Balcha: "I want to have an impact on my community by being a helping hand anywhere I can. I want to influence existing recreational programs to empower our youth. I would also like to further serve at church as well as the community outside of the church with love, support and encouragement. I want to inspire others to do the same and facilitate lasting change in the community." - Nathanael Belayneh: "There was a point in my life when I had everything that I had dreamed of as a kid: great grades, a great girlfriend, and a future that looked very promising. But there came a night in that season, that amidst all the 'success' I came face-to-face with something that completely altered both the course of my life and the person I am today. What I encountered was the Love of God and I have never been the same since that night. And so every day for the rest of my life, I want to be a living encounter of the love of God and show people how incredibly valuable their lives are to God. I want everyone in my community to live knowing that they have a Father who wants to fulfill their longing for acceptance with His love and wants to set them FREE from the things that oppress them." - Congratulations you two - keep on inspiring!
